Instant Popover Review

Matt Callen’s Instant Popover software was released last week. It looks great on the sales page video, but how does it measure up in practice? I have given it a test run and here is a full and frank review.

First, take a look at this page where I have put up an example of one of the 21 different ‘sticky note’ style popover designs:

Instant Popover example

This one is designed to show after 2 seconds and only appear once to each visitor. These are options that you can set when you create your popover. So if you want to see it a second time, you will need to clear cookies.

When you create your own, you can have them appear with any delay or no delay, and you can have them appear once, twice or more.

What I like about Instant Popover

- You get a huge variety of designs. You can choose from the following:

  • Sticky notes like mine
  • Window effects popover with shaded background page
  • Float-ins
  • Peeling ads
  • Alerts
  • Exit popunders

- All of these have many different design options. Peeling ads are great for offering discounts. Windows effect popovers can be used to practically force visitors to sign up to your list.

- You also get 30 free ‘handwritten’ fonts. I’m using an example on my sticky note popover. These are free fonts and you might find them elsewhere but you could waste a lot of time searching.

- Easy interface that walks you through creating and uploading your popover.

- If you don’t like the finished result, you can easily go back and change things. You do not have to start over, as with many other popup creators.

- You can save and reload all your different popovers.

What I don’t like about Instant Popover

I had trouble at first because I checked the ‘encrypted’ option. My popover did not appear and the support staff, although they answered me quickly, could not figure out why. I am sure they are very busy now, right after launch, but I was disappointed with their response. It wasn’t that hard to solve. When I looked at my code in Dreamweaver I figured out for myself that the encryption was probably the problem. Once I unchecked that option, everything was fine.

I have suggested they try to fix this in the first upgrade. But if you just bought it and you’re having the same trouble, turn off encryption, save the new code and try uploading again.

The only other little gripe is that the X box for closing the popover appears at a fixed point regardless of the size of the popup – so it can appear floating off to the right of the note. But I understand why they did this (it makes the software simpler) and you can easily change it by altering your html after you upload to your page.

If you don’t dare touch html you would need to either have someone do this for you, or leave the X slightly off the note. Perhaps not that big of a deal as that might make your visitors more likely to click on your popover and less like to close it ;-)

All in all, for me it is well worth the price you pay here to have this massive range of options in one easy-to-use interface. It gives you a huge variety of effective ways to capture your visitors’ attention, offer discounts and get sign-ups to your all-important list.

    1. Instant popever seems to be anice program, i have had a lot of problems with it though. The problem always appeared when the code the popover produced was supposed to work with internet explorer (which the majority of people use). Most of the times i was not able to use Popover when targeting normal internet users using IE6 and/or IE7.

    2. I’m surprised about that Dave … my popovers work fine with Internet Explorer. I just tested the one at http://www.mwpmarketing.com with IE7 and it shows up after a couple of seconds as it is timed to do, with no problem.

    3. this is pretty much crap when you concider using it with wordpress php, it does not work if you are not a IT professional.

    4. You’re right it is hard to find a popover that will work with WordPress. The problem is that there are so many different themes that people use, even plugins designed for WordPress do not work with all themes. The best is probably to get a supported WordPress popup plug-in. It’s not free but it is simple to set up for most themes and the support is very good. I had trouble with one of my themes and the guy actually went in and fixed it for me on my blog for no charge.
