How To Double Your Online Business Profits

I realised over the holidays how easy it is to lose motivation for an online business. I think if a person takes a real break at holiday time it’s great, but if we keep on checking email and spending hours online while doing nothing productive ‘because it’s Christmas’, we can get into a pit of unproductiveness that becomes very hard to escape. This has made me think about how many people give up with internet marketing, when they almost certainly could have made it.

Some people start off well but lose interest fast. One of the most dangerous times is when you are making some money, but have not become rich like you hoped. In fact, you are not making enough to live on and if you still have a day job you are wondering if you will ever be able to quit. The things you have to do, that seemed so much fun when you set up your first website and made your first sales, have become routine. You don’t seem to have anything new to learn these days. You know how to make a little money, but it’s not enough, and you’re getting bored.

This is a great moment to sit down and set out in writing what you want from your online business and how you will get there. Not how much money you want to make, but how you want to make it.

First, look at what are you doing right now that is bringing in the income that you have. You may be surprised to know that you could probably easily double your current profits without doing anything like twice as much work.

For a start, you can probably cut out some of your expenses. This will take virtually no work at all and you may be surprised what a difference it can make to your profits. Looking over my figures for the months where I was starting to make money from internet marketing rather than eBay, I can see two months where my income was actually slightly lower the second month but my profits doubled, because I started being very strict about my expenses.

Next, try to think of things that will supplement whatever you are currently doing – extra promotion methods, new places that you could advertise, experiment with ad placement or take a hour or two to find a really good related product with an affiliate program that you could promote to your current purchaser list.

If you can increase your income and lower your expenses at the same time, you may even be able to triple last month’s profits with hardly any more work.

Then consider what you really want to be spending your time on in your business, and the direction that you want your business to take in the future. Once you have assured the basic income that you need by building on your current successes, you will be able to spend some time learning something new. You probably know a whole lot more now about what you want than you did when you were starting out.

So you see that by spending a little more carefully focused time on the boring stuff right now, you will soon be making enough money to use that as a basis for moving into another area of online business that you may enjoy much more.
