I have noticed that my sites have started to get more traffic and make more sales in the last few weeks because of something quite simple that I am doing differently. All I have been doing is this:

First, I changed the layout of some blogs and sites so that they have the free gift signup form in the ‘hot spot’ at the top left instead of anywhere else on the page. I’m not talking about squeeze pages here but content sites.

Then I did some simple promotion of those content sites and blogs using social bookmarking … not Digg, Reddit etc but the ‘second class’ social bookmarking sites that will take virtually any link and don’t care if you have something to sell.

I use some software called SocialBot from ‘BigMike’ at Incansoft (that’s not an affiliate link by the way). This will spider your whole site/blog and then you can submit a couple of pages a day with 2 clicks … building more links every day for slow and steady growth. This has been very effective in drawing traffic to my sites.

I didn’t promote my product sales sites or squeeze pages at all, but sales have increased simply because of people entering the funnel through the subscription form on the content site. There are a lot more pages on the content sites and blogs that I can bookmark, and there is more to interest visitors too. These days I think most people don’t want to click on a link and end up directly on a sales page or even a squeeze page. They want to see some information from you before they even decide to invest 5 minutes in downloading your free gift.

I outsourced the task of creating accounts at all of the social bookmarking sites. Some of the sites are inactive so I think I had accounts created at around 60-80 sites for $13 through Rentacoder. That saved a lot of time.

What took the most time was preparing the list of sites for the outsourcer and then copying & pasting the username & password for the accounts into SocialBot. This took around 2 hours total. Then it was all set up and I go in and have it submit two blog posts or pages a day to all of those sites.

So new people come to the blog/content site … they download the free gift and join my list … and later, some of them become buyers.

This is a very simple formula that you can use to build a targeted list in any niche.
